The BrainMaster software, when first installed, is in a "basic" mode.  This is the mode it uses when there is no license key installed.

You can use the basic functions in the BMr such as EEG monitoring, the BrainMirror, and simple Alpha tones.  This entry level product is useful for personal awareness and meditation, and all the statistical  functions work.  It can also be used by third-party developers who want to operate their software in conjunction with the BrainMaster, and only need basic EEG functions from the BrainMaster software and hardware.

However, it is not possible to do training that depends on thresholds or protocols.  The basic built in folders are useful for the above mentioned uses and can be used for these purposes without limits.  In addition the software API's (Application Programming Interfaces) still work so this is a good platform for people's whose primary interests are in developing their own software as an extension to the BMr software, but who do not need the training capabilities for neurofeedback.

Home training clients will generally use a "Remote" license that will use either a time-limited (number of minutes), calendar-limited (expiration date), or unlimited license.  The protocols must be provided by a clinician, and the trainee can run any provided protocols.

Clinicians use the "clinical" license that provides all functions including protocol design, etc.
