There is substantial research that shows benefits of asymmetrical training, for example to make left frontal alpha become lower than right frontal alpha. The protocols described reward various equations, for example, a positive 'A' score when A = log(R) - log(L)  [R and L are right (F4) and left (F3) alpha power, respectively.  Other protocols may use equations like (A-B)/(A+B).

We do not include designs to train these ratios directly as expressed in the research, due to patent issues.  Dr. Elsa Baehr of Skokie, IL, is researching the use of such protocols, and she and Dr. Peter Rosenfeld of Northwestern University, can consult with interested clinicians.  It is possible to obtain from Dr. Rosenfeld a license to use these protocols, and Dr. Baehr can assist with their design and use.

As far as the software works, there are several ways to train asymmetry .  The Event Wizard is fully capable of training any equations or other relationships between channels.  Clinicians are using equation-based asymmetry training using their own designs, or designs obtained from Dr. Baehr.  Some clinicians have a license from Dr. Rosenfeld to use his protocol designs.

Alternatively, without using the equations, it is still possible to train asymetrically using asymmetrically designed amplitude -based protocols, and also using the Event Wizard.  The BrainMaster is a 2-channel EEG , and you can train one side up and the other down, for example.  There is also a demonstration settings file that trains left alpha to be below right alpha, in which right alpha is damped and used as a threshold.  This is one of the basic Event Wizard example designs, and is described in the attached document on Uses of the Event Wizard.  There are also various sound modes and displays that work well with this approach.
