My BrainMaster software is stalling. What do I do? |
|||||
We have gotten some reports of the system "just stopping"
or "stalling" in some cases. It is always possible that this
is a battery problem, so we have put some more diagnostics
into the new software.
We have discovered a case (on one of our OLD PC's) where
the PC just goes out to lunch for about 15 seconds, refuses
to do any processing, and eventually runs so far behind
that the communications buffer fills up. Then the software
stops, and the user does not have a good idea of what
happened. When this happens, the mouse stalls, no programs
run, and the PC just limps along at about 1/100 normal speed.
I don't know exactly what causes it, and probably never will.
This is very rare, and is definitely not part of normal operation.
It took a lot of testing to discover this, on the one PC that has
a 98% full disk, hasn't been checked for errors or defragmented in
over 1000 days, and this PC even stalls the mouse for long
intervals at times. I am not even able to defragment this
PC because the error check will not complete, even
in 14 hours. This is a sick PC, and would not run any
biofeedback software properly, I am sure.
But if this happens to you, you might suspect that
your BMr has stalled, when it is in fact healthy and working.
When I run a test session, I do tap the electrodes every
once in a while to see the real-time response and
ensure that everything is working fast enough,
and there is no backlog. This is a good idea, but not
a suitable guarantee for general usage.
We have improved the 2.0SE and later software so that if the PC goes
into a stall condition for any reason, we can detect
it and send a message box to the user. In these cases,
the PC needs some kind of maintenance or Windows
hygiene, or needs to be put out to pasture as a spam filter
.
This is a very unusual situation, and is clearly
unacceptable on the part of the PC. The good news is
that we have identified this behavior, and now have software
that can detect it and notify you. This should reduce
the amount of suspicion of bad modules in the future, and
may eliminate some unnecessary returns of good equipment.
If you are seeing this and have 2.0SE or later software, it
will have the message box enabled in case of
a PC stall condition. Instead of just stopping, the
software will say "PC Comm Error, etc. etc." |
