A Neurobehavioral Approach To Remediating the Sequela of Brain
Injury and Stroke - The Life Quality Recovery Program (LQRP) exists to facilitate remediation of the long- term cognitive and behavioral challenges resulting from mild to moderate brain injury and stroke.
GOAL: Participants completing the LQRP will experience reduction in brain injury symptoms and impairments, including: Cognitive impairment, Motor impairment, Sensory deficits, Attention deficits, Diminished
motivation and energy, Somnolence, Altered mood, Pain, Impaired organizational skills The intention of the LQRP is to: Facilitate return to fuller function, Enhance clients' potential,
Promote increased independence and improve quality of life, Reduce cost of long-term care
PROCESS: Through a program combining Neurotherapy and related cognitive and behavioral treatment methods
participants are assisted in recovery of skills and abilities impaired or lost as a result of injury. The LRP utilizes an intensive three week format. In this process, four participants with a family member or
significant other are treated by two senior clinicians and clinic support staff during a six - seven hour treatment day.
Neurotherapy is the centerpiece of the treatment process.
Neurotherapy is a process of EEG feedback in which the individual is provided with direct real-time information about brain function. The feedback information, like a dancer's reflection in a studio mirror, creates
an opportunity for development of skill that was previously unavailable to the persons consciousness.
Specifically, injured areas of the brain appear in EEG recordings as abnormal
excesses of slow frequency patterns (delta and theta), and abnormal deficits of faster frequencies (alpha and beta). By placing sensors on the scalp over the injured area, the abnormal slow frequency patterns can be
displayed as visual and auditory feedback via computer. As the individual attempts to alter these abnormal patterns, even the smallest increment of success can be detected in the feedback process. In all types of
learning, having an accurate feedback loop supports and encourages success. Therefore the Neurofeedback learning process is a highly specialized method for helping the brain learn how to recover healthy patterns
disrupted by injury.
Over the past twenty years, research and clinical experience has found that Neurofeedback is an effective component in the treatment of a range of Central Nervous
System Disorders, including head injury, stroke, coma, epilepsy, migraine headache, post-traumatic stress disorders, substance abuse, attention deficit disorders and cognitive dysfunction. Life Quality Resources,
Inc. in the Life Recovery Program utilizes the latest research and clinical results on Neurofeedback for brain injury treatment.
